To our Clients and Admirers,
We bring you some unfortunate news today. In April of 2014, my wife, Kandas, the Ka in ShãKa Studios, was diagnosed with an aggressive and fast growing form of breast cancer. Always the humorist, Kandas has named this unwanted guest in her body, Bertha.
Kandas and I have been through many challenges in our time together as husband and wife and business partners over the past 16+ years, and we both feel that this is but another challenge that we will overcome.
At the end of 2013, we announced plans for me to retire from full-time custom furniture creation so that I could move forward onto other artistic mediums that I have been pursuing. A startup venture would not be prudent at this time, since time management and resources will be issues in our battle against breast cancer; we both agreed it would better for me not to retire until after this challenge has been overcome.
Dealing with the diagnoses and her first chemo treatment has been very time consuming, and life changing, for our family, our home and our business. That is why we ask for patience from our clients with jobs currently in the build queue.
We received and unexpectedly high number of orders when we announced my retirement. We then experienced one of the longest and most severe winters in Texas history. And now, we have this new challenge to overcome. Each item we build is important and deserves equal attention. We have always refused to sacrifice quality for the sake of timeliness. We are currently working through the orders we received in December will then move on to the orders received in January. Time and time again, we have been told that ShaKa Studios Furniture is worth the wait. This fact will never change.
Although she will continue to be an integral part of our business, Kandas will no longer be able to give ShãKa Studios her full attention. Her chemo treatments cause extreme fatigue and limited focus.
I again ask for patience from our clients, as I will be directly addressing most of the queries regarding current and future orders. Please understand that any time I spend emailing and on the phone takes away from the time I have to build. I must manage my time accordingly.
What will become of Shãka Studios?
Shãka Studios will be streamlined to focus on the core products that I have perfected over the past 29 years.
We will continue our search for a qualified artisan to assist with production. Only someone with the same high standards and attention to detail as myself will do.
Until a qualified artisan is hired, I must limit building production to one piece per week, or the equivalent thereof, for example, one Fairfield Media Center or one king-size pencil post bed.
I will also be signing each piece with my personal signature logo. This is something that I have rarely done. This mark has always been reserved for artistic pieces that I feel that are worthy of being called “art.” After 29 years of building furniture, there are currently less than 15 pieces that have this mark.
I will also offer a few of my fine art works for sale. In the future, we may add pieces from other Texas artists that we admire.
I will be updating and adding new items exclusively on Esty for the time being. We will slowly implement the changes on our main website. Kandas will need to help me with these changes as she is able. Although I am a wiz in the field of fine art, websites and blogs are a challenge for me.
Going forward, please contact me directly with your questions and comments.
Kandas will also be forwarding e-mail or phone messages that need addressing. Please be patient, it may take me up to 48 hours to respond.
I would also like to give a heartfelt thank you to all the people that have supported us during this curve ball. With the assistance of family and friends, I am confident that Kandas and I will be hitting them out of the park once again.
If you’d like follow her journey, Kandas has been blogging very candidly and openly on her personal blog, MomGeek.
Many sincere thanks to all,
